Every three years the great minds of the Echigo-Tsumari (Earth Art Festival) find a new location to host amazing installations from primier artist from around the globe. Held in the rural region of Japan’s Niigata Prefecture, this artistic gathering brings together approximately 100 to 200 new artist in addition to a few permanent installments. One of the most highlighted artist of this years festival is multinational MAD Architects. The creative group worked to complete the restoration of the historic Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel in the area.

Dubbed the ‘Tunnel Of Light’, the studio grasp their inspiration from 5-key elements (wood, earth, metal, fire, water) to base their design off of. The crew crafted architectural interventions inside the 750-meter passageway.

“The designs rethink the relationship between humans and nature, and seek to re-connect locals and visitors alike with the majestic beauty of the land,” said the company in a statement
