Design| London’s Wallow Street Gets New “Soul” Spot “Mitsu” Supported by Astet Studio

This Spring, at the heart of Shoreditch, London, is the newly designed Japanese izakaya (a term for a Japanese bar) that has been re-imaged by the brilliant minds at Astet Studio. The venue meshes East London’s nightlife with the dark-styling of the Japanese izakaya all while embracing the thriving neighborhood that surrounds the location.

Astet Studio took to the venue and focused on the importance of integrating Japanese culture with the contemporary urban elements it’s surroundings provide. The studio’s approach began with the fluent bar space that seamlessly connects with the outdoor terrace, creating an open space feel for the daytime experience, while also expanding into a more social yet intimate setting at night. Fully pursuing the need to maintain traditional izakaya aesthetics, the venue boosts features like wood structures, translucent framed glass, and textile screens that filter light.

Another notable design note that pays homage to Japanese nightlife and dining, is the open kitchen design that is elevated in the venue allowing guests to witness the sounds, aromas and gestures of Japanese robata cooking. The entire izakaya experience at this renovated venue is poetic and indulging providing life for the theatrical dimension of cooking, combined with music and lighting. During the day, the bar area is a bright and open feature while at night the space transforms into a more intimate, high-voltage social setting where the lighting dims and the DJ-booth becomes center-stage. This Spring is expected to fueled by great food and unmatched energy.
