Japanese architect Kengo Kuma returns to the design world with yet another nature-focused project that celebrates the brilliance of connecting modern design with the ethos provided by nature. In the heart of Quito, Ecuador is the newly designed skyline breaking building dubbed The Qaptial Tower.
Marking this as the first project in Ecuador for Kengo Kuma, the designer teamed with Uribe Schwarzkopf on this 32-story tower that reaches 125.8 meters in height. The stunning tower brings Kuma’s ideology to life as the careful fusing of nature into a built environment and takes inspiration from the rich geology of the Andes Mountains. Design touches that stood out include the floor-to-ceiling windows and organic “carved” balconies that are adorned in greenery. The illusion provided by the collaboration of the building materials and the chosen greenery is that of a plant-filled crevice of volcanic rock. Kuma notes that the goal is to highlight the natural materials utilized in both ancient Japanese and Ecuadorian ceramics and described as “focus on nature and texture”.
Changing focus from the exterior and building design to the interior details and amenities includes 509 micro‑apartment studios ranging from 21 – 36.15 square meters. The compact living concept responds to Quito’s growing short‑term rental market, providing flexible opportunities for both residents and investors. Added amenities including a wellness area, fitness center, private cinema, game room, pet spa,and a sky terrace. The rooftop is also equipped with a swimming pool is adorned with a bespoke mosaic by Fornasetti.
With 93.7% of units already sold prior to groundbreaking and prices starting at $69,990 USD, Qapital is positioned as both a landmark addition to Quito’s skyline and a symbol of the city’s evolving design culture.
