News| @GameOfThrones Is Showing Music Artist The Importance Of Sync Licensing

Today’s most viewed series without question has to be HBO‘s Game Of Thrones (GOT) which is gearing up to showcase their last and final season. With the high anticipation surrounding this debuting, the creators of this amazing series have taken new age steps to keep fans engaged with the build-up of this last season. Amongst merch sales, event pop-ups, and meet & greets, one approach that GOT is taking to further build their momentum is releasing a whole album for the upcoming season.

Building a full album for a visual feature is usually seen in the movie industry as 2018 was the year of major Movie Album releases such as Black Panther, A Star Is Born, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and many more. The Hip-Hop genre gained much appeal for these kinds of opportunities as artist such as Kendrick Lamar, Future and others were recruited to executive produce these entire albums. The growth in popularity for albums in films have made this process even more attractive to any major visual release. Game Of Thrones has followed suit and has taken to developing a sonic project that will accompany the release of their upcoming season.

Dubbed For The Thrones: Music Inspired By The HBO Series, Game Of Thrones creators have taken a great interest in the talents of today and have developed a full project featuring names like ASAP Rocky, Chloe x Halle, Ellie Goulding, Jacob Banks, James Arthur, Joey Badass, Lennon Stella, Lil Peep, Maren Morris, Muse’s Matthew Bellamy, Mumford & Sons, Rosalía feat. A.Chal, SZA, The Lumineers, The National, The Weeknd, Travis Scott, Ty Dolla Sign, and X Ambassadors.

Why Does This Matter?

For upcoming artist, the stress of gaining playlist popularity has over saturated creative minds from the full opportunities of the music industry. While most bullseye target getting on Spotify Playlist, the average artist has never submitted their music for Sync Licensing which grants the artist’s music the chance to be apart of major projects such as For The Throne. We are not here to give the impression that once you have your music go through Sync Licensing that you will be on the next Spike Lee Joint or the next season of American God’s but we are suggesting that it furthers your chances.

For those in the back of the class, completely lost on what I am speaking of, Sync Licensing is “a music license granted by the holder of the copyright of a particular composition, allowing the licensee to synchronize (“sync“) music with some kind of visual media output (film, television shows, advertisements, video games, accompanying website music, movie)“. If you ever wondered why NBA2k had your favorite rapper on it or how did a certain growing underground rapper make it on a new movie just previewed, this is how. Due diligence is what my friends and I call it but the most common name that a Major Label will tell you is sync licensing.

So How Do I Get Sync Licensing?

Well, that’s a very important question and has a extensive answer that we will wait for a WHOLE different post to explain. What we suggest first is learn more about Sync Licensing and the benefits of having your catalog associated. The more you grant your music to be shared on more then just streaming platforms the more you will see the numbers on those platforms grow.
