Conceptual art studio Design By Reborn, is a Saigon-based art world known for creating contemporary art through reviving ideas, objects, stories and architecture that have been forgotten. Utilizing Vietnam’s landscape and culture, the renown art studio gears up their latest series dubbed Rise of the Vietnamese Robots. This series captures influence from Vietnamese Window Grills that have been transformed into limited edition self-assembling robotic sculptures and flying machines.
Inspiration for this series is a true at home design concept of paying homage to the architectural design of the Window Grills that adorn most homes in Vietnam. Stated by Design By Reborn:
Walking around the back alleys, one can find hidden treasures made of metal. These window designs and motifs borrow their styles from European and Oriental origins. The journey began by discovering & documenting them. Each grill was photographed, the exact address noted & then turned into motifs.Taken from https://www.reborn.design/about
The making of these magnetized blocks stem from the artist influence held in the design of these window grills. Each piece is designed from a block of wood, which is then fitted to magnets. After this is properly assembled, then the blocks are painted in traditional Vietnamese lacquering. Each window pattern is then silk-screened onto the sculptures.
With each robot and flying machine is accompanied with an assembly diagram to assist in constructing the sculptures. In addition is also a map to find the location of the individual window grills that influenced this series. The goal is to inspire people to walk around the city and take in all the cultural designs and the rich architecture many have forgotten.
