Renowned for his vibrant colors within his paintings, JJ Manford has again returned with yet another whimsical series that is being showcased at New York’s Derek Eller Gallery. The Brooklyn based artist takes this time to compose pieces that play in-between the natural and the constructed world.
Dubbed “Hayden Rowe Street“, the collection is comprised of paintings detailing domestic spaces filled with art historical objects, textiles and furnishings, along with contemporary iconography. The paintings are crafted from oil stick, oil pastel and Flashe paint that combine for outstanding color display as these imaginary visual stories are told.
“The absence of the human figure—in spaces depicted almost life-sized—makes the viewer sensitive of their own embodied presence. As if to underscore this fact, Manford has recently made room sized rugs and ottomans based on those depicted in several of his paintings. The designs are his, but initially existed only in the paintings themselves, highlighting a constant give and take between art and life that occurs in his work.”
