On November 15th, Studio Museum in Harlem will officially be re-opening their doors to the public in their newly renovated 82,000 square foot home.
This new announcement comes at the tail end of the seven-year overhaul period. This new home was expected to be available to the public by 2022 after it’s brief closing in 2018 but instead was taken down and remodeled in a multi-million dollar expansion project boosted by David Adjaye of Adjaye Associates. This seven story structure will see a 70% spatial increase including the indoor and outdoor spaces. Additional features partake in a 14,000 square foot state-of-the-art exhibition space, a rooftop terrace, flexible program spaces and a studio and lounge.
“As our historic homecoming approaches, I am reflecting on the transformative vision of the artists, supporters and community members who have helped us shape this pivotal moment in our legacy, … Our breathtaking new building is an invaluable space and a tribute to the museum’s mission and the vitality of artists of African descent. I am thrilled to welcome everyone back to a reimagined Studio Museum, rooted in Harlem and resonating far beyond.”
said Chief Curator Thelma Golden in a recent statement
In celebration of the re-opening of the new home, Studio Museum in Harlem will be hosting Community Day on November 15th, offering free admission and art programming. For more information, head to the museum’s website.
