French based architecture firm Ciguë has come to NYC to transform a renowned NoHo storefront belonging to popular barista brand 12 Matcha. The staple location placed at 54 Bond Street is a two level 1870’s cast-iron facade that has been detailed to showcase a long service bar and ordering area on the ground floor, with a secluded seating lounge and intimate tasting room below.
Maintaining the historic touch of the venue, Ciguë creates two moods through out the facility. The upper level is more open and bright, while the lower floors express a more intimate and moody environment. The framework of Douglas fir floorboards are kept to play with the design charm that this one bank-turned-theater provides. The space is dedicated to providing an upscale matcha enjoying experience and the interior aesthetic provides a warm and soothing space for all visitors to enjoy. The colorway throughout the space gives an example to that: walls wrapped in green-toned clay evoke fresh tea fields, while a dark green-enameled lava stone bar anchors the ground level. Adding to the value of space and comfort is the customized furnishing meshed with the hand-applied green lacquered aids the matcha theme.
Key touches to this renovation include slatted window shades filtering natural light, meant to provide that Japanese tea-field aesthetic. Yet moody and intimate, the walnut staircase directs guests to the all-glass enclosed tasting lab.
