Design| The Faulkner Architects Deliver The Pine Flats Which Meshes Seclusion with Resilience

Dubbed The Pine Residence, the Faulkner Architects has recently unveiled their off-grid family ready retreat is brilliantly tucked away in the stubby hills of Healdsburg, California. The location aids the design and aesthetic choice as these hills fell victim to the 2017 Tubbs Fire, which devastated the area but has since been brought back to life with newly placed residences that are crafted to protect against the repeating of this natural disasters.

The Pine Residence sits at the heart of the 10-acre landmark that sits 2,000 feet above ground-level. The house is crafted from sustainable materials like the non-combustible exterior shell primarily composed of weathering steel (Corten) and glass. Adding to the nature based aesthetic and detailed design, the architects boost the home’s character with the continuous translucent skylight that runs the length of the main hallway. This design allows for a high-level of natural light which complements a subtle walkway of warm, minimal palette of native valley oak and concrete. Large scale floor-to-ceiling glass paneling are strategically placed to showcase the Mayacamas Mountains and the distant Pacific Coast Range. Due to the seclusion of the location, the house is powered by a photovoltaic array coupled with battery storage, while a geothermal heat pump manages climate control.

The successful merging of high-performance resilience with a sensitive aesthetic, the Faulkner Architects delivers a cozy residence that both protects residents from potential wildfires all while providing a brilliant view of the natural world.
