A drive through memory lane is revisited as Audi returns to an era where the race for speed was an international obsession that was stamped in automotive history. During the 1930’s, Audi focused along with the world on making a historic push and introduced the Silver Arrow. Known at that time as the “Rennlimosine” (racing sedan), the Silver Arrow was re-imagined and unveiled recently in the Italian city of Lucca was the re-imagined 1935 Auto Union Lucca.
The original Auto Union Lucca was a product of an intense rivalry between Audi and Mercedes-Benz over the world’s speed record. This enclosed-cockpit machine with tear-drop wheel arches, covered spooked tires, and fin-like rear design is a wind- tunnel research product by the Berlin-Adlershof Aeronautical Research Institute. Hiding underneath the vintage aerodynamic shell is the re-crafted monstrous power-system that made this a history making machine. The 1935 version of the car held a 5.0-liter block but the recreation is geared with a visually identical 6.0-liter supercharged 16-cylinder engine from an Auto Union Type C. This helps the Lucca to push out 520 horsepower at 4,500 rpm which maintains a healthy breathing system for the engine funneled through upward-pointing exhaust pipes.
Since the ceremonious unveiling that took place in Italy, the true first public dynamic run is scheduled for the Goodwood Festival of Speed this July.
