Pace Berlin continues to expand the artistic gallery experience with their latest group exhibition of Goodbye Sadness, Hello Sadness, which is displayed in a bar-themed aesthetic. The German-based flagship that was once an ex-gas 1950’s station in Schöneberg, is always providing the unexpected in interior and design setup.
The nightlife themed display, which is available for viewing until August 23rd, is a replication of the renowned “Bar Va Bene”, Friedrich Kunath’s storied studio bar that’s placed on the first floor. Visitors are engulfed in the neon hued moods and codes of the after-hours through the works of 27 artists such as David Lynch, Pol Taburet, Robert Nava, Kylie Manning, Elmgreen & Dragset, Alicja Kwade, and more. The exhibition itself is a masterful merging of artistic takes placed in a world of grandeur and moodiness. Goodbye Sadness, Hello Sadness is well branded by neon lite lettering that is placed on opposite ends of the Kunath’s art bar. The name itself is derived from Bonjour Tristesse, the 1954 novel by the then-18-year-old Françoise Sagan. The book sets the stage for the exhibition’s exploration of abandon and belonging, where night serves as not just a social site, but an effective metaphor for possibility and uncertainty.
Goodbye Sadness, Hello Sadness is now on view in Berlin until August 23. The gallery will be open for extended hours for “Bar Va Bene,” which you can check out Thursday through Sunday from 5 PM to 10 PM.
