G-Shock has officially unveiled their MRG-D5000 featuring an outer case and bezel all rendered entirely in synthetic blue sapphire crystal. The limited edition piece has a global production of only 20 pieces at a price tag of $80,000 USD.
Conceived by brand creator Kikuo Ibe in 2017, the shock-resistant timepiece required nearly a decade of technical development. Constructed entirely of lab-grown blue sapphire crystal adorns the outer case and bezel of the 16.45mm thick watch. G-Shock engineered a unique interlocking assembly framework that defies traditional drill holes or screw method. Each sapphire element interlocks like a three-dimensional puzzle to absorb and disperse impact forces. The watch also maintains subtle G-Shock features such as it’s 200-meter water resistance and solar-powered functionality.
The MRG-5000 maintains the original 1983 square silhouette, featuring a blue vapor-deposition brick-pattern face detailed with 24-carat gold lettering. On the back-side of the watch reveals a Grade 5 titanium caseback set with sapphire crystal. Signifying the uniqueness of this release is the engraving on the back stating “DREAM PROJECT“. Each piece is also identified by the release number attached on the back ranking from 1/20 to 20/20. Each one of the 20 watches oin the series are all hand-assembled by a single senior technician at Casio’s Yamagata facility.
The G-Shock MRG-D5000 Blue Sapphire has been made available in an ultra-limited production run of 20 pieces globally via G-Shock.
