Our phones today have replaced our sense of formal communication and social media notifications are a leading distractor for most while in social settings. Looking to aid this social phenom and combat the issue of “phubbing” (short for phone snubbing), renowned pure malt-lager house Heineken unveils their technology dedicated to keep phone users less distracted. With the first-ever anti-distraction device has been presented dubbed “The Flipper“, which is an automatic phone case flipper that come equipped with technology to automatically turn over the phones.

Utilizing a growing hashtag, #SocialOffSocials is an initiative dedicated to getting people to reconnect in real time while in public settings. “The Flipper” is engineered with a robotic arm that flips the phone face down when sensing the word “cheers”. The AI-Trained technology is designed to detect the word in a vary of ways. The intentions are meant to speak to having fun while focusing on a bigger issue that often goes unmentioned.

Heineken recruits the brilliance of Swedish expert inventor Simone Giertz to test the device first, which she states “I’m trying to spend less time on my phone and more time socializing and so far my strategy has been ‘be really hard on myself’. But that evidently doesn’t work very well. So I love ‘The Flipper’ – it’s just a clever solution and a good reminder for me to not get distracted by social media when I’m trying to socialize.
