Minnesota trio Wild Horses share their brand new single “Sunrise on the Absaroke,” available everywhere.
The song is accompanied by a cinematic, official music video that captures life on the road with the maverick Grand Rapids, MN trio, which is comprised of married couple Jed LaPlant [vocals, guitar] and Ariana LaPlant [vocals, fiddle, keys], joined by longtime friend Landon Pahl [bass]. Born during a long-haul drive from one gig to the next, “Sunrise on the Absaroke” showcases the group’s signature hybrid of folk, Americana, and country,. Across the track, an upbeat chord progression resounds from the body of a vintage acoustic guitar, melting into the embrace of evocative fiddle. Jed processes the exhaustion of the struggle to make a dream reality on open-hearted verses deepened by Ariana’s gentle, yet heartfelt hum. The tune culminates on an admission sung to the steering wheel of the band’s D.I.Y. converted bus, “Sunrise on the Absaroke, and I don’t know when I’ve been this broke, just living out the dream they said we had until we don’t.”
“The verses paint a picture of driving this hot oily bus somewhere in Montana a long way from home and trying to make it happen. At the time, everyone else was asleep. I was in the driver’s seat watching the sun come up in the Absaroke Mountains. I was thinking of some numbers, and I thought, ‘This might be the last tour we ever do’. I didn’t know how long it could last.”
About the song, Jed said
“Right before the tour, we discovered we had a huge mold problem in our house. We had personally built it three years prior out of old wood Jed’s dad milled before he passed away. We couldn’t live there anymore, and we actually had to demolish it. We were wrestling with this news and trying to figure out what we were going to do next. It was the end of an era because we were ‘living in the in-between’—as the lyric says.”
Ariana added
However, the best way to experience Wild Horses is live. Next month, the band will open for Charley Crockett at a handful of shows, followed by a two-week run supporting Sam Barber, a set at Evanston Folk Fest, and a fall tour with Trampled By Turtles.
