What has been the most enticing and reviewed experience in 2024 so far would be the ongoing Rap Battle between two of Hip-Hop’s leading names, which is Toronto’s own Drake verses Compton, California’s Kendrick Lamar.
The rap beef saga began earlier this year with what many call “The First Punch” with Kendrick Lamar featuring on Future & Metro Boomin’s “WE NEVER LIKE YOU” album. On the title track “Like That“, which hit #1 on Billboard, was the initiation to the what is now labeled as the biggest Rap battle since Jay-z & Nas. Drake promptly responded with a series of releases including “Push Ups” and “Taylor Made Freestyle”. Fans patiently waited for the LA-artists’ response but started to write it off as the time drew long and the patience ran thin. Just in time, Kendrick shows face and gets right back to attacking Drake and his late counterpart J.Cole.
Kendrick held no punches as he addressed many things with Drake and his most recent releases with bars like: “I hate when I rap, I talk about guns, then somebody die / They turn it to nons’, then hop online, like “Pray for my city” / He fakin’ for likes and digital hugs / His daddy a killer, he wanna be junior, they must’ve forgot the shit that they done / The mention must run in his family, but let it get shaky I park your son / The very first time I shot me a drac’, the homie had told me that “Aim it this way” / I didn’t point down enough, today I show you I learn from those mistakes / Somebody had told that me you got a ring, on God, I’m ready to double the wage / I rather do that, than let a comedian n***a make Pac turn in his grave .”
He took jabs at Cole like “Yeah, Cole and Aubrey know I’m a selfish n***a / The crown is heavy, huh,” continuing with “I pray they my real friends, if not, I’m YNW Melly / I don’t like you poppin’ sh*t, that sh*t for real, I inherit the beef / Yeah, f*ck all that pushin’ P, let me see you push-a-T / You better off spinnin’ again on him, you think about pushin’ me?”
Many friendly shoutouts are accompanied to friends like Lil Yachty and Sexyy Red and pokes fun at Drake’s “The Boy” nickname and demeanor.
“Euphoria” is not yet available for DSP enjoyment but can be heard on many social media platforms.
